Introduction

Why on earth walk from Land's End to John O'Groats?

Mid life crisis, another mountain, who can explain these things. A germ of an idea that seems quite good in your own mind, you speak to one or two people, and all of a sudden you are being asked "when do you start your walk?" Carefully avoiding April Fools Day I chose 3rd April 2004, and suddenly it's "Game On".

What does it entail? Simplistically it is walking between 1,100 - 1,200 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats over a period of 69 days and averaging around 17 miles per day. To put into effect however there is lots and lots of planning, phone calls, accommodation booking, shares in Ordnance Survey, help from friends, and a very long suffering wife.

So lets do it for something useful - Christian Aid week falls right in the middle, and is a charity well worth supporting, and with Eliot working for Oxfam and I dare not fail to support them. So I am inviting sponsorship from you, with all money donated going directly to the two charities in equal proportions. Please see the sponsorship page, and just contact me by email if you would like to help me help them. I can assure you I will earn every penny.

The outline planning has been done using the excellent book by Andrew McCloy "the LAND'S END TO JOHN O'GROATS walk" as the basis and the index at the left will take you through the various stages of what I hope to achieve.

I cannot praise Andrew's book too much - he brings a wealth of experience gained over many years within the grasp of the ordinary walker.
